Australia is an island continent so our marine environment is part of our national identity as well as being crucial to our economy. As a Marine Scientist, Students will gain the kind of knowledge necessary to make a real difference to the management and conservation of that environment, as well as developing a full appreciation for its current state and the predicted impact of climate change. Students will also gain the knowledge needed for preparing a variety of roles across industries including marine environmental management, fisheries, offshore oil and gas, tourism and recreation, marine biotechnology, biodiversity conservation and marine ecology. Also, by including units in biology and environmental science, Students will develop an even broader appreciation of our marine environment's interaction and impact on other key ecosystems. Students will also get opportunity to build a solid understanding of the complex physical and biological interactions within the marine environment from a teaching staff rich in research-based knowledge, practical experience and enthusiasm whilst benefiting from their direct links with Australia-wide research institutes and industry experts.Students will also have plenty of opportunity to get hands-on experience in our laboratory-based classes, as well learning how to develop field-based research through our 1-week field trip on the Marine and Estuarine biology units.
Major knowledge of biology
In this course major studies include development of knowledge needed for preparing a variety of roles across industries including marine environmental management, fisheries, offshore oil and gas, tourism and recreation, marine biotechnology, biodiversity conservation and marine ecology.
As per normal undergraduate admission requirements. There are no prerequisites for admission but it is highly desirable for students to have undertaken TEE Chemistry or Chemistry 3A/3B and at least TEE Discrete Mathematics or Mathematics 2C/2D.
Students after completing this graduation from Murdoch university, Graduates will be eligible for admission to a wide range of professional societies.
Australia is an island continent with some 86% of its population living in coastal regions. The sea has great economic value to Australia with extensive economic activity in marine tourism, fisheries, marine transport and offshore petroleum industries. The coast also provides a vast recreational industry that many Australians use on a regular basis and have a deep and abiding interest in. Depending on skill combinations or specializations student possess, Murdoch degree may lead towards work and study opportunities in a number of areas. Listed in the following are some of them: Marine Biologist:- Marine Biologists study salt water organisms, and limnologists study fresh water organisms. Much of the work of marine biology centres on molecular biology, the study of the biochemical processes that take place inside living cells. Marine Environmental Ecologist:-Marine Environmental Ecologists study the relationships between marine organisms and their environments and the effects of influences such as population size, pollutants, rainfall and temperature. Ecotourism Consultant:-Ecotourism Consultants offer ecological advice or designs that balance ecological, economic and human needs to individuals, businesses, community-based organisations, and local and regional governments in other countries.
