Philosophy is the oldest discipline and the source from which the natural and human sciences have grown. It is the nature of philosophy to address itself to everything that is puzzling, disturbing, exciting and new. The study of philosophy does not always offer answers, but instead teaches how to ask good questions. The study of Philosophy develops critical and rational faculties, instill a positive sense of impartiality and fairness in considering the views of others, and foster a cautious, reflective attitude towards others whose comprehension may exceed your current opinions and beliefs. As a Philosophy student, Students are invited to raise questions and debate them in a supportive environment and an atmosphere of lively curiosity.
General knowledge
Major studies include development of rigorous grounding in the central areas of the subject, namely: epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, the history of philosophy, and logic.
After pursuing this degree from Murdoch university the students gets accreditation from “The Australasian Association of Philosophy”.
Unlike medicine, law or veterinary science, philosophy is not a vocational degree - it does not provide automatic entry into specific professions in the non-academic workforce. Studying philosophy will provide students with an advanced level of generic skills that are immensely useful in a wide range of jobs, in such diverse fields as: Journalism and Media, Government and Public Administration, Computing, Law, Education, and Research. As student of philosophy, the applicants will get following opportunities such as :-The ability to analyze and evaluate arguments. Philosophy teaches will be able to distinguish between good arguments and bad arguments, irrespective of their subject matter, and thus to be able to make informed decisions and recommendations on contentious issues. Clarity of thought. Philosophy helps student to separate distinct issues. Advanced communication skills:- Philosophy graduates have had to meet very exacting requirements in communicating their ideas, both in written and oral form and will also get opportunity to learn how to frame, express and convey ideas. Breadth of vision. Philosophy graduates are accustomed to being exposed to new and confronting ideas, and have an appreciation of the value of different perspectives on life, society and knowledge.
