The Bachelor of Social Work offers the students, The knowledge and understanding of social functioning, social problems and social services, as well as the skills to provide assistance to people in the students community. Social Workers are committed to the principles of human rights, social justice and no-oppression. During period of this course, the students will undertake two professionally supervised fieldwork placements.
General knowledge about society.
The major studies included in course is gaining of knowledge and understanding of social functioning, social problems and social services,as well as the skills to provide assistance to people in and around the community of the students/peer groups.
In order to be eligible for entry to the course applicants must either have completed the equivalent of at least two years full-time study in a degree program, in which they have studied a minimum 25% of psychology. A minimum of 25% of Sociology units or their equivalent is also required.Students are invited to check with the admissions coordinator whether they have sufficient and appropriate prerequisite units,have successfully completed the Diploma of Social Science (Community Welfare), or its equivalent, in the TAFE sector; and, have completed 75% of a full year of the BA or BSocSc with level 100 units in which they have studied a minimum 25% of Psychology. A minimum of 25% of Sociology units or their equivalent is also required,have completed a relevant degree in a related field such as nursing, education, political science or social science,it is also recommended that students study Aboriginal Studies at level 100.Further criteria for entry is academic achievement,relevance of previous study to social work,demonstrated interest in the course and the career, relevance of previous work experience to the course and career,equity and special considerations. Part-time study is not available to international students. International students are not eligible to study at the Cradle Coast Campus.
This course articulates with other degrees and units from recognised tertiary institutions as well as with the Diploma in Social Sciences (Community Welfare) (or equivalent) from TAFE institutions in Australia. Specific details are given under the heading 'Admission and prerequisites'. Students with prior learning, qualifications and experience may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for BSW subjects, including their first Fieldwork practicum.This course leads to accreditation with the Australian Association of Social Workers which is also recognized in the United Kingdom, many parts of Asian and other overseas countries.
Graduates may gain employment in fields such as child welfare, criminology and corrections, not-for-profit, women's and youth services ,counseling,, disability support government, international aid.
