A major in Integrated Design equips students to apply their imagination to address contemporary issues in an independent and creative way. Design is a speculative discipline which can be achieved by using different technologies and methods when creating drawings, models and prototypes. As part of the creative process students will undertake collaborative work on multi-disciplinary projects with a variety of individuals. Practical studies will be supported by investigations into design communication and sustainable design, as well as considerations of relevant historical and ethical issues relating to design. Collaborative design studios form the backbone of the Integrated Design major. Studio teaching is supplemented by studies in the history of aesthetics and technology, appropriate technology units and units designed to allow designers with different backgrounds to develop a shared 'language' that crosses traditional disciplinary borders. University of western Australia (UWA) has invested heavily in cutting-edge model-making and prototyping technologies including laser cutters and a three dimensional model maker. There is a well-equipped workshop and students have the benefit of the Cullity Gallery to exhibit their work. The Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts brings together the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, visual arts and urban design. This grouping represents a substantial breadth and depth of design experience that can inform and inspire new design students and will continue to expand to encompass additional design disciplines.
