Geography provides students with insights into some of the major challenges facing the planet, including population explosion, growth of megacities, natural hazards, environmental degradation and climate change. It is the science of place and space, standing at the intersection of natural and social sciences. Geographers study the Earth's landscapes, peoples, places and environments, and how these interact. It is, quite simply, about the diverse and interconnected world in which we live. Many of the world's problems require an understanding of the interdependence between human activities and the natural and cultural environment.Teaching methods consist of lectures from leading experts, practical, computer and laboratory classes and tutorials. This major also includes field work and three field trips of two to three days. The Faculty is well equipped for teaching and research in geography and our teaching is supported by the world class research of the Centre for Regional Development, Centre for Environmental Economics, the Oceans Institute and Policy and the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management.
