University of Western Australia

Geology is a broad scientific discipline that studies the Earth, its materials, landforms, processes and history. It branches into many aspects of the physical planet, such as earthquakes, volcanoes, mudslides and flooding. Exploration geologists use their knowledge of the Earth's surface to discover resources of value. Geology is a science that aims to understand all aspects of our planet, ranging from the Earth's surface to the deep interior. It also aims to discover how the Earth has evolved during the past 4.4 billion years, including the origin of continents, oceans, atmosphere and life. Applying knowledge of Earth processes and time scales is fundamental to locating resources such as groundwater, petroleum and minerals, and understanding climate and other environmental changes. Most of Australia's mineral and petroleum resources are in Western Australia, so UWA is well placed for students to gain geological skills. Teaching methods consist of lectures from leading experts and industry professionals, practical, computer and laboratory classes and tutorials. This major also includes extensive field work and four field trips of three to ten days.
Good knowledge of geography.
In this course major studies include gaining of in-depth knowledge related to Earth, its materials, landforms, processes and history, earthquakes, volcanoes, mudslides and flooding.
Students graduating with geology major can apply for graduate membership with the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG).
Employment opportunities are plentiful in the resources industries (minerals, geothermal, and groundwater) or research fields such as planetary geology, volcano or earthquake hazard prediction. Additional employment opportunities exist in government agencies dealing with resources or environmental companies and agencies. Many graduates continue to develop their specialist skills in industry or government agencies around the world, while others join academic institutions. This course leads to become a: Environmental Scientist, Geologist, Geophysicist, Geotechnical Engineer, University Lecturer.
