Marine science includes marine biology and ecology, marine and coastal management, and oceanography. It combines knowledge of marine aquatic life with a solid understanding of the physical environment. Through experimental design and research, Students will learn to appreciate the complex interactions that occur in marine ecosystems. Western Australia's marine environment is a biodiversity hotspot with up to 80 per cent of fish, invertebrates and other organisms found nowhere else in the world. This makes WA an ideal living laboratory for studies. Teaching methods consist of lectures from leading experts and industry representatives, weekly practical, computer and laboratory classes and tutorials. This major also includes field work and three field trips of two to six days. UWA is well equipped for teaching and research in marine science and our teaching is supported by the world class research of the Oceans Institute, Centre for Marine Futures, and the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS).
