Psychology is a challenging and wide-ranging discipline. A major in Psychological Science will build a scientific understanding of the psychological processes of the individual and the relationship of these processes to brain function. By studying this major students will also develop an understanding of how these psychological processes are affected by aging and by brain damage and disease. To complement lectures from renowned experts in their various fields, students will have the chance to discuss, apply and expand on the theories described in unit in practical laboratory classes and structured tutorials. The School of Psychology is well equipped with a strong commitment to psychology as an empirical science. The Psychological Science major emphasizes the biological basis of cognitive processes and focuses on integrating contemporary research and theory.

In this course major studies include development of psychological processes of the individual and the relationship of these processes to brain function and how psychological processes are affected by aging and by brain damage and disease.
Students with majors in Psychology in Society and Psychological Science can pursue further studies at honors level, and, following that, at the postgraduate level a PhD and/or professional training can be undertaken. At present, postgraduate professional training is available in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and Clinical Neuropsychology. Students can also apply for our other postgraduate professional courses.
The Psychological Science major will prepare students for a career in research as well as a range of careers in which knowledge of human nature is valuable, such as Government agencies, business, teaching, and welfare. Student’s expertise with psychological measurement techniques and experimental design and data analysis mean that market research, advertising and the media are also career options. When combined with a major in Psychology in Society, this major can also lead to further study and professional qualifications in Psychology. A four-year degree is required by the Psychologists Board of Australia for provisional registration as a psychologist. For specialist training a professional postgraduate qualification must be completed.
