University of Western Australia is one of the university that offer undergraduate science communication programs in Australia. This major must be taken in conjunction with another science major, giving both sound scientific knowledge and highly marketable communication skills. This major will teach students to communicate effectively with audiences ranging from children to scientists. Science Communication will provide students with experience in new media, written, oral and visual presentations, science performance and working with industry experts. Classes are generally a mixture of lecture and tutorial, complementing learned theory with discussions, demonstrations and collaborative group work. The course provides authentic learning experiences as student’s develop and refine a Science Communication portfolio, including writing, videos, podcasts, professional reports, presentations, exhibits, posters, websites and more. In practicum, Students are individually placed with an organization that will enhance networking and employment opportunities.

Science communication generally refers to public media presenting science-related topics to non-scientists. This often involves professional scientists (called 'outreach' or 'popularization'), but has evolved into a professional field in its own right. It includes science exhibitions, science journalism, science policy and science media production.Science communication can also simply describe communication between scientists (e.g. through scientific journals) as well as between non-scientists.
Students with a Science Communication major can pursue further studies at honors level, Master of Science Communication or PhD. Other further study options include the Master of Science, Master of Science Communication and Education, and the Master of Teaching.
As a Science Communication graduate, Students will be sought after by employers for written and verbal communication skills. Career can take any number of paths such as finding employment in science centers, museums, zoological and botanical gardens, environmental education, schools, research organizations including government agencies, non-government organizations, hospitals, industry and as journalists. Some graduates have been offered positions by the organization that hosted their practicum placement. This course leads student to become a: Conservation Officer, Health Promotion Officer, Journalist, Media Presenter, Training and Development Professional. Science communicators use their knowledge of science to bridge the gap between the scientific community and the public and to facilitate discussion about important science issues.
