Western Australia is one of the world’s hotspots for terrestrial biodiversity, as well as a marine hotspot, with up to 80 per cent of the region’s fish and invertebrates found nowhere else in the world. This makes Western Australia the ideal living laboratory for studies in biological science. The Master of Biological Science will give students an understanding of the molecular evolution, structure, physiology, reproduction, behavior and ecology of organisms. The Master of Biological Science allows students to specialize in zoology, plant conservation biology or marine biology.The zoology specialization focuses on animal structure and function, and the evolutionary processes that have endangered animal diversity. The plant conservation biology stream focuses on the application of systematic, evolutionary and ecological science to the management of threatened plant species and the mitigation of threatening processes. The marine biology stream uses an experimental and research approach to develop understanding of the complex interactions that occur in marine ecosystems, and how this understanding can be used to guide the management of marine systems. In all specializations there is an emphasis towards fieldwork, which reflects industry expectations for graduates (and particularly post-graduates) to be able to design, conduct, and report on, field research and monitoring.
Basic knowledge of biology.
Deep understanding of molecular evolution, structure, physiology, reproduction, behavior and ecology of organisms, zoology, plant conservation biology or marine biology is involved as major part of study.
International students must have a bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline (where required), completed to a sufficiently high standard.
Graduates will be eligible to join the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS) as Intermediate Members and once they have completed 2 years relevant work experience will be eligible to sit the AIMS Professional Membership Examination to become full Professional Members.
This course gives students an understanding of the molecular evolution, structure, physiology, reproduction, behavior and ecology of organisms, and the skills to apply this knowledge to the management of natural systems and the species they support. This course leads to become an Biologist, Botanist, Conservation Officer, Environmental Scientist, Marine Biologist, Zoologist.
