The Master of Biological Science, with a specialization in Plant Conservation Biology provides an introduction to assist students to prepare to mitigate environmental impacts on biodiversity. Human activity and population growth are increasing the pressure on natural ecosystems The Faculty's teaching is supported by the world class research of the Kings Park and Botanic Gardens Biodiversity Conservation Centre, the WA Biogeochemistry Centre, the Ecosystem Restoration Laboratory, the Centre for Evolutionary Biology, The Oceans Institute and the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management. Many plant conservation biologists focus on the most threatened species, genes and communities, and employ systematic, evolutionary and ecological science to underpin such endeavors. Others work on threatening processes and their mitigation, such as loss of biodiversity due to habitat destruction, fragmentation of wild areas, dieback disease, invasion by feral animals and weeds, and salinity.
Basic knowledge of biology.
Major studies include development of skills related to Biomedical Sciences, Cell and Molecular Biology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Ecology, Evolution and Conservation, Forensic Biology, or Microbiology or students may choose to obtain the Bachelor of Science in General Biology.
International students must have a bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline (where required), completed to a sufficiently high standard.
This course is recognized by the Society of Biology, which means that if student’ s meet their requirements for Associate Membership of the Society of Biology on completion of graduation, Then students will be able to apply for full membership .
Plant Conservation Biology graduates are employed by government departments (for example, Environment and Conservation), botanic gardens (Kings Park), zoos, and research agencies (CSIRO). In addition, the mining sector, private environmental companies (such as Environment Australia), regional natural resource management groups, and shire councils provide a range of employment opportunities.
