Early childhood teachers play a critical and foundational role in preparing young people for life-long learning and participation in society. As a graduate of this course students will have an in-depth knowledge of the theory and the practical skills required for early childhood teaching. Students will be eligible to work in state and independent schools, as well as other early childhood settings, both nationally and internationally. This course has a strong emphasis on the interface of play, directed learning and teaching across all developmental domains and learning areas and is informed by comprehensive and contemporary understandings of early child development. Students will be introduced to teaching and assessment techniques in a range of important curriculum areas including music, art, science, health and physical education. The integration of theory and practice is an important aspect of this program and students will have the opportunity to practice their teaching skills in school placements each semester. Final year students are offered the opportunity to enter an 'interventions' stream, with an action research component that focuses on helping children who have learning difficulties or who need extension, or a research stream that can lead to entry into doctoral programs.
