This course aims to produce psychologists who have the necessary academic and practical foundations, skills and experience to become competent clinicians grounded in the scientist-practitioner tradition. This is achieved through the provision of specialist training in clinical neuropsychological assessment, research and intervention skills. Students take units in basic neuroscience and clinical psychology, and in the methods, findings, and theories of clinical neuropsychology. This program is intended for students who are motivated to become future leaders in the field of clinical neuropsychology by developing and combining high-level skills in clinical practice and research, in ways that will enable them both to engage effectively in professional practice and to significantly advance the discipline. The key feature of this combined program is the consistent emphasis that it places on enabling students to appreciate, and to effectively capitalize upon, the exciting synergies between practice and research in clinical neuropsychology. This is achieved through the constructive integration of clinical skill development and research training within each of the three interlaced component of the program: the coursework component, the placement component and the thesis component. The fusion of these capabilities enables University of Western Australia graduates not only to perform effectively as clinicians, but also to make major ongoing contributions to quality improvement, innovation, and the development of best practice within the field of clinical neuropsychology.
