Course Description
The course is aimed specifically at the needs of furniture designers and makers and aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, competencies and awareness which are necessary for graduates to practice their profession.
Assumed Knowledge
General knowledge of Furniture, technique associated with its design.
Major Studies
The major studies included in this stream are aimed to prepare the applicants specifically at the needs of furniture designers and makers and aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, competencies and awareness which are necessary for graduates to practice their profession. The course requires students to demonstrate competencies in the analysis, synthesis, judgment and communication of concepts and ideas in furniture, as well as the ability to apply successfully the acquired theoretical knowledge, and technical and professional skills.
Eligibility Criteria
Students who have a broad academic background and a demonstrated interest in, commitment to and aptitude for design will be considered for admission. A limited number of places are available to applicants who do not meet the normal University entry requirements. Such applicants will be required to attend an interview and present a folio of creative work and/or demonstrate skills and knowledge that suggest they could successfully undertake the course.
Professional Accreditation
Articulation to or from the course the applicants who have completed the first year of the Diploma of Arts (Furniture Design), accredited by the State Training Board of Victoria may be granted some credit towards the Associate Degree, however this will occur on a case-by-case basis.Applicants who have passed subjects or units in other approved courses (completed or otherwise) in approved tertiary institutions may have such studies credited towards the Associate Degree, provided that the Faculty may specify what more must be done to qualify for the degree. This course is accredited by the Design Institute of Australia.
Career Prospectus
Graduates may find employment such as Self-employed designer and furniture practitioner, Employee working as a designer or maker in the fine wood industry, as a designer in a furniture production house and as a production manager in the production of furniture.
