The Associate Degree in Science is a multidisciplined degree allowing students to select studies from the following areas: Aquaculture,Biochemistry,Chemistry,Computer science,Geography and environmental studies,Geology(earth sciences),Mathematics,Microbiology,Physics,Plant science,Psychology,Zoology. These several foundation units form the first stage of the Associate Degree. A number of these foundation units may also be taken by students who wish to obtain specific subject or entry pre-requisites for other degree programs.
General knowledge about Science and its importance in Medical Field.
The course aims to meet the needs of students who may have a limited background in science by providing an introduction to the foundations of a range of science disciplines, providing opportunities to acquire knowledge, attitudes and skills in a range of basic physical, computational, mathematical, earth and life sciences, introducing students to scientific method through a range of disciplines, providing graduates with core knowledge in at least two science disciplines, developing academic and scientific skills to allow students to articulate with confidence into a Bachelors Degree for further in-depth study.
The program offers an alternative method of entry for applicants who do not meet the standard admission requirements. It prepares students for entry to degrees in science and engineering offered at the University of Tasmania. Specific units from the foundation component of the Associate Degree (Stage 1) may be taken by students seeking admission to degree programs with specific admission pre-requisites.
Articulation to or from the course can be awarded on successful completion of foundation units students may apply for their enrolment to be transferred to a Bachelors degree. No credit will be given for the Foundation Level units into a Bachelor degree. Students articulating into the BSc degree will receive between 150% and 200% of credit and will have satisfied the Year 1 and 2 core requirements of the BSc specifications. This course is accredited by the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (A.I.M.S.).
The Associate Degree in Science articulates to the Bachelor of Science. However the students decide not to continue onto the bachelor's degree, the following employment opportunities are available as Laboratory assistant, ,Science technician, Field-work Assistant, Administrative officer.
