The term "clinical" does not necessarily imply an activity implemented in a hospital setting. It describes that the type of activity is related to the health of the patients. This implies that community pharmacists and hospital pharmacists both can perform clinical pharmacy activities.Clinical pharmacy is more oriented to the analysis of population needs with regards to medicines, ways ofadministration, patterns of use and drugs effects on the patients.Clinical Pharmacy is a commonly used term in pharmacy practice and in pharmacy literature. The course also aims to provide a pathway towards a Research Higher Degree.
General knowledge about Clinical Pharmacy and its importance in medical field.
Major studies include development of a broad range of knowledge, skills and resources to practice effectively as a clinical pharmacy practitioner involved in the quality use of medicines and pharmaceutical care. These skills include the capacity to individualize, review and monitor a patient's medication regimen, demonstrate effective communication skills in clinical and non-clinical scenarios, critically appraise medical and pharmaceutical literature, as well as to recognise and describe social issues relating to medicine use.
The students are expected to have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Tasmania or another university or tertiary institution deemed equivalent, and will be registered pharmacists. Where an undergraduate degree has been recently obtained (within one year), a minimum average grade of 60% obtained in the final year of study would be required for entry to the Graduate Diploma of Clinical Pharmacy program. Appropriate post-graduation work experience of at least one year will also be normally considered as a requirement for acceptance into this program.
The graduates of the Graduate Diploma of Clinical Pharmacy course may progress to Master of Clinical Pharmacy. This in turn may lead to candidature for Research Higher Degree (MPharm or PhD).Formal professional recognition of this course is recognised by way of exemption of Stage 1 of the AACP Accreditation.
The course should equip registered pharmacists with the fundamental knowledge and skills to enhance career opportunities as a clinical or consultant (medication review) pharmacist.
