Medicinal chemistry is a rapidly growing field that explores chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology and how they work together to design and produce medicinal drugs. During this course, students will focus on building practical skills as well as understanding the theory and research which apply directly to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Students will learn about the characterization of drugs and drug-like molecules, computer-assisted drug design, drug analysis, molecular biology, pharmacology of drugs and drug research and development. Medicinal chemistry is a strongly growing area within pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and research organisations such as the CSIRO.
