Asian Studies introduces students to the many cultures, societies and politics of Asia including China, Indonesia and Japan. It explores the impact of the great religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam and investigates the dramatic changes that colonialism and revolutions have brought to the people of the region. Students will also develop critical knowledge of contemporary Asia and the social, cultural, political and economic forces which are shaping modern societies in the region. Students will examine topics as diverse as popular culture, gender relations, environmental issues, political transformations, the media and Australia's relations with the region.
Good knowledge of history.
Development of skills related to cultural, political, economic, historical and social issues in the Asian region are included as major part of study.
This major lays the foundation for further study options at honors and postgraduate level.
Graduates with a good understanding of Asian cultures, societies and languages are in short supply. They have excellent employment prospects in Australia and in the rising economies of Asia. Many employers in Australia and Asia including human rights, education, tourism and media organizations, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the World Bank, and the United Nations give priority to the employment of graduates with an Asia-related academic background. This course leads student to become a: Foreign Affairs and Trade Officer, Interpreter, Management Consultant, Media Presenter, Media Producer, Policy Analyst, Policy and Planning Manager, Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Translator, Workplace Relations Adviser.
