The Master of Counselling is a skill based course which aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills required for employment in a range of counselling roles. Theprograms provide opportunities for graduates with a background in psychology, behavioural science or another area of human services, and people working in community service, education and health settings, to obtain a professional qualification in counselling or rehabilitation counselling.
General knowledge about Counselling.
Developing an understanding of the theoretical basis of counselling and the ethical, legal and professional issues in relation to the practice of counselling, and the acquisition of counselling skills, Understanding of the social, cultural and developmental context in which counselling occurs and a range of therapeutic approaches and appropriate to a range of client ages, needs and circumstances.The course also aims to provide professional development opportunities for people working in counselling roles.
The requirements for entry in to this course are completion of a degree with a major in psychology or behavioural science, or a degree in an affiliated area or other equivalent qualifications. Applicants must have completed all units required for the Graduate Diploma in Counselling.Candidates will be interviewed and may be required to submit a professional statement including professional references, statement of intent, work history and police records check. Applicants must also provide a one page summary of an empirical article (article and summary guidelines are provided to applicants prior to interview).
Articulation to or from the course may be given to the students who have completed a relevant undergraduate degree and the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Counselling may be eligible to progress to the Master of Counselling.The Master of Counselling meets the requirements for eligibility for listing on the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) .
Counselling graduates work in a wide range of settings including relationship counselling organisations, secondary and postsecondary education, community welfare centres, drug and alcohol agencies, church agencies, and private practice.
