Information Technology is increasingly important in a legal context. The use of information technologies in business and government raises legal issues around intellectual property, knowledge management and software use. In this program students will develop IT skills to build and use information systems, manage data, or build client-server web applications. Students will also explore the relevant legal frameworks for these processes. In this degree students will explore one of three IT areas: Software Technology, focusing on: programming, software engineering, discrete mathematics. Business Information Systems, focusing on: information systems concepts and issues, information systems for management, information systems audit and assurance. Web design and development, focusing on: state-of-the-art web design practice, cloud-computing, web as a big-data platform. Macquarie Law will give students knowledge of legal principles and the critical and analytic skills to really understand them. Students will study established areas such as constitutional law, international law, contract law and family law.

Gaining of knowledge related to Introduction to Computer Science, Discrete Mathematics, Introduction to Systems Design and Data Management, Criminal Justice and Procedure, Foundations of Law, Contracts, Law, Lawyers and Society, Database Systems, Torts, Jurisprudence, Property Law, Equity and Trusts, Business Organisations, International Law, Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Civil and Criminal Procedure are the concepts included as major parts in this course.
This course is accredited with professional bodies regulating the admission of law graduates to legal practice.
Students can pursue careers where their Information Technology studies allow them to specialise in their work as a legal practitioner (barrister or solicitor), legal officer in public or private sectors, and in legal academia. Students are also qualified to pursue a career in IT, for example as a Programmer, Systems Analyst, Project Leader, Systems Development Manager, IT sales and marketing, Systems Engineer, Database Administrator, End-user support and training, Communication systems analysis and design, and IT or Management Consulting.
