Speech and hearing sciences examine how we produce and perceive spoken language. In this degree students will study a range of speech and hearing topics including how we create speech sounds using the vocal apparatus, the way the ear responds or sometimes fails to respond to different kinds of sounds and how computers can be used in speech analysis. Along with speech and hearing, students will study linguistics, psychology and biology. Students can specialise in one or more area including audiology, speech and language pathology and speech research.
Gaining of knowledge related to Human Biology, Language: Its Structure and Use, Introduction to Psychology, Phonetics and Phonology, Grammar and Meaning, Introduction to Sociolinguistics, Introduction to Psycholinguistics, Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Processes, Language as Evidence, The Acoustics of Speech, and Current Issues in Phonology are the concepts included as major parts in this course.
If students wish to qualify for clinical practice in either audiology or speech and language pathology, students will need to do further (postgraduate) study in order to gain the appropriate professional accreditation.
