The course aims to enable graduates to fulfil key roles in the IT and related industries, and to liaise between IT personnel and other professional and industrial personnel.The term information technology (commonly called simply IT) can be defined as "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware."

In this course major studies include development of knowledge in information security and assurance, core technologies used in making a networked information system secure and assured, To build information systems with assurances and the role of penetration testing in delivering these assurances.
The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology may accept as a candidate for the Graduate Certificate in Information Systems if applicant satisfy any of the following criteria such as a person who has a 3 year degree from an accredited university institution,  a person who has demonstrated IT competencies and relevant professional experience of seven years' standing that indicate a level of knowledge and skill comparable to those of graduates in similar circumstances. For entry into all postgraduate courses, international students must provide an IELTS test score or a TOEFL score with a Test of Written English score.This test must not be more than 24 months old.At the discretion of the Faculty, admission may also include an interview.
Up on completion of this degree from University Of Tasmania, Students become eligible for Associate membership of the Australian Computer Society .
Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Information Systems could expect to find employment as a business analyst, database analyst, systems analyst, IT project manager, IT manager, information manager, database administrator, IT administrator or manager, telecommunications manager, IT consultant, electronic commerce or electronic business consultant, web developer, webmaster.
