Software engineers create, maintain and modify computer and software programs such as operating systems, communications software, utility programs and compilers. They design and develop many types of software including computer games, operating systems, network control systems, and middleware and business applications to meet specific business needs. A major focus of this degree is on practical learning based on the use of modern hardware techniques and software technologies to design, construct, manufacture and manage systems and products. Completion of this major as part of the Bachelor of Engineering will prepare students for a career in software engineering. Students can combine this major with one of the following as a major or minor of the Bachelor of Engineering: computer, electronics, mechanical, mechatronic, and telecommunications engineering.

Gaining of knowledge related to Introduction to Introduction to Engineering, Engineering Practice, Engineering Project Practices, Industry Experience, Engineering Research Thesis, Systems Design and Engineering, Engineering Principles and Practice, Computer Science, Fundamentals of Computer Science, Digital Fundamentals and Numerical Techniques, Introduction to Systems Design and Data Management, Mathematics, Thermodynamics, Relativity and Fields, Physics, Particles and Waves, Algorithms and Data Structures, Systems Programming, Object-Oriented Programming Practices, Software Engineering, Discrete Mathematics, Programming Languages, Algorithm Theory and Design, Cryptography and Information Security, Engineering Mathematics, Advanced Software Engineering are the concepts included as major parts in this course.
Students are eligible to this course if they have HSC Mathematics (Band 4), Higher levels of HSC Mathematics, HSC Physics or Chemistry, Engineering Studies, Senior Science, Information Processes and Technology and/or HSC Software Design and Development or
Macquarie University will be applying for accreditation for this new major in due course in accordance with Engineers Australia’s requirements. Programs accredited by Engineers Australia are recognized internationally.
Students of this course will have career as a business systems designer, computer and communication network engineer, engineering researcher, financial analyst and software modeler, planning/policy analyst, project and technology manager, software designer and developer, systems developer.
