The Graduate Certificate in Paramedicine is a collaborative program offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery in conjunction with St John Ambulance Association, Australia. This one-year course is designed to provide registered nurses with the appropriate knowledge and skills to become ambulance paramedics. The course includes an extensive internship with the St John Ambulance Association.
Basic knowledge of science
In this course the major studies includes the studies related to appropriate knowledge and skills to become ambulance paramedics.
A Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or equivalent is desirable, and must be registered as a comprehensive or general nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Western Australia. Students must have at least 24 months experience in an acute area of practice. A hospital-based diploma may be considered.The following clearances are required before applying for this course such as Criminal record screening and clearance, Communicable Diseases, Working with Children, and a current WA driver’s licence. All prospective applicants will be subject to an interview and selection process with St John Ambulance Association and Curtin University.
This course consists of two courses that are linked through a program code.  The Bachelor of Nursing is accredited through the ANMAC and the Graduate Diploma of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) is currently undergoing accreditation with the Australiasian Council of Ambulance Authorities Inc.
Graduates of this course will be eligible to work as registered nurses or apply for graduate entry to the ambulance services. Graduates of this course will be able to work as professional registered nurses with the skills to work in health facilities ranging from primary to tertiary settings, and who will have a specific knowledge of regional and Indigenous health services. Graduates of the Graduate certificate in paramedicine will have the knowledge base to support their decision-making processes, and work in a multi-disciplinary team, with a positive and caring attitude.The course is specifically designed to allow registered nurses to work as ambulance paramedics.
