Basic knowledge of Japan and its intercultural importance.
The major studies included in this language course are design and development of the core potential in the theoretical and practical understanding of the discipline,  to acquire a strong foundation in and in-depth knowledge and skills of the discipline, being able to engage critically with the discipline.
Normal admission requirement are a successful completion of the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Arts (Specialisation) or a Bachelor of Arts degree or its equivalent from the University of Tasmania or a University degree from another university or tertiary institution, deemed to be appropriate by the Faculty of Arts or candidates not holding a bachelor's degree but whose employment experience indicates a level of knowledge and skill deemed by the Faculty to be sufficient to complete the course satisfactorily may be deemed eligible for admission.
Graduates may become eligible for membership with the following professional bodies: National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters at the first Professional level (formerly NAATI level 3) and NAATI accreditation at Conference Interpreter and Advanced Translator level (formerly NAATI Level 4).
A knowledge of one or more foreign languages can be useful in a wide range of careers. These include working as a translator, interpreter(simultaneous and consecutive), language teacher or linguist, education, language and translation services; or policy development and research positions in government departments and non-government organisations, diplomatic services, international relations, trade and business, and media.In this criteria the students can pursue further degree in Masters Of Arts (Japanese).
