This is the first degree of its kind in Australia. Students combine art and science skills to specialize in the areas of dental technology practice. Dental technicians work in an integrated environment within the other dental professions, and they are responsible for performing the dental laboratorial components used by dentists such as dentures, crowns, bridges and other devices needed in all areas of dentistry. The Dental Technology program is a professional program with no patient contact and involves extensive laboratory work from the first year of the program. The Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Technology program requires students to have an aptitude for and particular interest in dental laboratory work. The Bachelor of Health Science contains introductory science-based content that is more in line with the Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science program.
Good knowledge of biology.
The major studies focuses on gaining of knowledge in oral biosciences and biomedical foundations in oral health. This course emphasizes the importance of prevention as a goal and introduces clinical practice. Development of the knowledge and clinical skills needed for the care of individual patients. Exploring the principles and philosophies underlying health promotion for individuals and the community are also involved as major concept of study.
As a dental technician, Students will work in close liaison with referring dental practitioners and specialists. Students can own and operate a dental laboratory, or work in a laboratory in the public or private sector. Further study may qualify you as a clinical dental technician (dental prosthetics).
A minimum overall band score of 7.0 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 6.5, a minimum score of 580 on TOEFL or an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 92 (no score less than 22).
