Understanding human behavior and the many variables affecting it is fascinating work and a key aid to understanding people caught up in the criminal justice system, which is the focus of the psychological science component of this degree. The criminal justice component comprises studies in criminology and the Australian legal and social systems. As a graduate of this program, Students will be qualified to help meet the growing need in the criminal justice system for professionals with a background in psychology. Year 1 provides the foundation knowledge across the disciplines of psychology and criminology, including law, political science and sociology. In Years 2 to 4, this program develops the studies of psychology, criminology and criminal justice further. An optional professional placement in the final year offers practical experience in a justice-related workplace for one day a week.
Good general knowledge.
As a graduate, Students may undertake a further year of study (honors or postgraduate) in psychology which will make eligible for associate membership of the Australian Psychological Society and general registration, with probationary conditions, as a psychologist in Queensland. Criminology graduates may become eligible to join The Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology.
There is a big field of human service careers to choose from in the public or private sector such as probation and parole, community corrections, guidance, health management, family services, counselling, child protection, program and policy development, research and administration.
A minimum overall band score of 7.0 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 6.5, a minimum score of 580 on TOEFL or an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 92 (no score less than 22).
