Curtin university

The industry prerequisite to practise as an occupational physician in Australia is Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM) within the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, part of which requires an external course of study related to occupational medicine. Curtin’s Master of Occupational Medicine has been designed to meet this requirement. It has been created with input from practising occupational physicians and covers all of the nine domains outlined by the AFOEM.  Of the 15 units, 13 can be studied by distance education, and the two occupational medicine units will be taught in intensive block mode. They include elicitation and analysis of occupational and environmental history, assessment of fitness for work, sickness absence and principles of management, and planning and evaluating health interventions to change individual and workplace behaviour.
Basic knowledge of science
A Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree or equivalent and relevant work experience.
As well as supplying the academic training required for Fellowship of the AFOEM, the course also provides the opportunity for supervised research and evidence based practice, enabling you to conduct and interpret investigations in relevant settings, and also design, implement and evaluate prevention strategies.
