The photographic image is the primary conduit for visual communication in contemporary culture today. Photography's unique relationship with reality is the most powerful force for expressing and understanding ourselves and the world we live in. Within this degree, Students are introduced to the craft, politics, philosophy, and language of photography. Traditional and contemporary views are learned and questioned within a critical framework to discover relevant innovations intrinsic to photographic discourse. In this course students will combine conceptual, critical and creative processes to generate distinctive photographic vision. Our unique combination of analogue and digital facilities, small group interaction with highly acclaimed practicing academics, and specialist work integrated learning opportunities in a small creative community atmosphere produces a highly dynamic and transformational learning experience.
The major studies include contemporary commercial skills from Australia’s finest commercial photographers and respected academics. Development of skills relevant to the diversifying creative and commercial photographic industries is also studied.
The professional accreditation after completing bachelor’s degree is that this degree prepares students to enter one of the exciting professional photographic fields. By combining courses from the Art Department and the Department of Design, as well as support classes in Journalism and Business, the program equips students aesthetically, technically, and professionally for a future in photography. The program has a curricular emphasis on the visual arts, integrating areas that are particularly valuable to those considering a professional photographic career or continuing in a graduate program.
With a keen appreciation of the politics and philosophies underpinning the practice of photography and the motivation to work innovatively, Students will be capable of working and contributing at a professional level in the creative and rewarding spheres of advertising and design, fine art and public art, or news, photojournalism and documentary photography, where opportunities can be found across the world.
A minimum overall band score of 6.0 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 5.5, a minimum score of 550 on TOEFL or an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 79 (no score less than 19). English test results must be no more than two years old.
