In this course students will study a broad and integrated knowledge and understanding of the scope of the maritime domain and its main areas and boundaries, appreciate the processes and institutional frameworks that are significant in the development of public maritime policy, demonstrate a critical understanding of a selection of concepts, principles and terminology associated with effective governance of the maritime domain, demonstrate knowledge and understanding that is detailed in some areas of specialisation infirmed by forefront developments, use a selection of the principal techniques and practices associated with some areas of specialization,practice routine methods of enquiry and research,operate in a professional environment that includes a degree of unpredictability and variation.
General knowledge about Maritime Engineering.
Major studies include development of broad and integrated knowledge and understanding of the scope of the maritime domain and its main areas and boundaries, development of public maritime policy, critical understanding of a selection of concepts, principles and terminology associated with effective governance of the maritime domain.
Candidates for the Graduate Certificate in Maritime Studies (specialisation) a Bachelors degree or equivalent in maritime related study or engineering, science, business or management studies, Master is Certificate of Competency (including Master <300GT) with significant industrial experience, Engineer Class 1 or Class 2 Certificate of Competency with significant industrial experience,Advanced Diploma of Nautical Science or Marine Engineering (or equivalent) and signficant industrial experience.Other qualifications and/or industrial experience deemed by the Course Coordinator to be the equivalent of the above.
This course is accredited by the Engineers Australia.
The marine studies course will provide students with a broad range of skills to work in this environment. Students will gain knowledge of marine biology, the marine environment and water quality, practical skills in identifying marine plants and animals, researching marine habitats, seamanship, aquarium maintenance, presenting tour commentaries and first aid. Some of career options may include deckhand/ research assistant/eco tourism guide on dive, charter, research, fishing or environmental monitoring vessels or on shore based operations.
