These kinds of programs prepare students to practise competently in a variety of maternity settings, in accordance with the international defined role and scope of practice of the midwife. The Master component will provide graduates with a basis for advanced studies in areas such as midwifery, family and child health and women's health. It will encourage graduates to base their practice on current research. Graduate Diploma of Midwifery (commencing 2013) is  subject to Nursing and Midwifery Board accreditation.  The course is taught predominantly online therefore personal access to a computer and internet facilities is essential for learning and teaching purposes.

The aim of this course is to prepare advanced practice midwives for leadership roles in a range of practice settings.The need for referral and consultation is required during pregnancy. As part of the multidisciplinary team, students will develop competence in recognising and implementing, culturally appropriate midwifery models of care during pregnancy. Students examine current research as a means of determining best practice for women experiencing a complicated pregnancy.
Applicants must have current registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, and have completed a tertiary qualification in nursing, or equivalent, have qualifications and experience deemed to be the equivalent, attend an interview and satisfactorily complete examinations and practical tests as required by the School of Nursing and Midwifery; produce evidence of recent nursing experience in an appropriate setting.
The Mildred Hansen Prize in Midwifery,the prize will be awarded to the student who has successfully completed the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery course with the highest overall results, including both curriculum based units and practicums. The annual value of the prize will be $500 or any greater amount determined by the selection committee, having regard to the income from the endowment. Riawunna Centre offers a wide range of services to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students and their communities in Tasmania. Riawunna assists all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are studying at the University of Tasmania. This course is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council.
ACM supports Australian midwives/students midwives to maximise their potential to provide best practice through evidence based care; and provides financial assistance through scholarship program which allows students to develop new skills and in-depth knowledge in midwifery, whilst offering career opportunities to interact with peers.
