The Graduate Diploma in Pathology is a course that considers the pathological processes, their interrelationships and emphasis on clinicopathological correlation. These units relate to the acquisition of knowledge and skills in the clinical utilisation of Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Immunology and Medical Microbiology.
General knowledge about Pathology.
The course aims to provide a greater understanding of the clinical relevance and significance of pathology testing by expanding on the scientific basis of the chosen area acquired through an undergraduate degree, to provide other appropriate health professionals opportunities to advance their own practice and knowledge in their chosen field,to give candidates advanced theoretical knowledge in the above areas to enable them to undertake further postgraduate studies in these disciplines.
This course is intended for applicants who are currently employed in a diagnostic pathology laboratory, or have previously worked in a laboratory and wish to change or update their skills or interstate/overseas applicants. Applicants must have a bachelor degree or equivalent and relevant work experience for entry. The degree or equivalent will normally be in Biomedical Science, Applied Science, Pharmacy, Medicine but may be in Veterinary Science or Nursing. Selection will be based on academic background, work experience and referee reports. Applicants will provide completed University of Tasmania Application for Admission and Enrolment forms along with relevant information stated with acceptable evidence of English proficiency (international applicants only).
This course is accredited by the Australian Society for Microbiology and Australian Institute of Medical Scientists.
The main purpose of the Graduate Diploma in Pathology is to advance students knowledge in Clinical Haematology and Chemical Pathology or Immunology and Medical Microbiology, to develop the advanced knowledge and skills required to function as specialists in a chosen field of Clinical Haematology or Chemical Pathology or Immunology or Medical Microbiology.
