The School of Pharmacy provides education in pharmacy and related sciences from undergraduate to doctoral level, conducts research programs and acts as a centre of drug expertise for the Tasmanian community.The school has developed a strong clinical emphasis in its teaching and research programs, supported by honorary clinical teachers in hospital and community pharmacies throughout the state.The course is designed to equip non-pharmacy graduate students with the fundamental knowledge and skills to enhance career opportunities within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries,academic pharmaceutical research, or pharmaceutical regulatory organisations.
General knowledge about Pharmacy and its global importance.
The Graduate Diploma of Pharmaceutical Science offers the graduates with a knowledge gained in the pharmaceutical sciences, and developed skills in written and verbal communication in these areas. The students will deliver many presentations to their peers and lecturers during the completion of the course, and extensively utilised information technology. Also they will experience problem solving in the pharmaceutical sciences, and will study the global context of pharmaceuticals, both social and ethical implications of these will be emphasized.
The students are expected to have a minimum of a science-based Bachelor's degree of the University of Tasmania or of another university or tertiary institution that is deemed equivalent.
There is no anticipated formal professional recognition of this course. The award of the Graduate Diploma of Pharmaceutical Science will not qualify a person for registration as a pharmacist. This course is accredited by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.
It is expected that graduates may be employed in a variety of areas within the biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical industries such as in the manufacturing, research, quality control and marketing of pharmaceuticals,other organisations and institutions where employment could be expected which may include medical research institutes, hospitals and associated biomedical research laboratories, universities, government research laboratories, and government regulatory agencies.The other graduates will undertake Masters or PhD programs.The graduates will have an in-depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical sciences which will prepare them for careers in health and industry.Articulation to or from the course the graduates of the Graduate Diploma of Pharmaceutical Science course may progress to Master of Pharmaceutical Science. This in turn may lead to candidature for Research Higher Degree (MPharm or PhD).
