Roads and pavements are a large component of the national investment in infrastructure, and there is increasing appreciation and the demand for technical specialists with road engineering skills, and career opportunities is constantly on raise.The Centre for Pavement Engineering Education Inc. (CPEE) is an incorporated association established by Austroads (the National Association of State Road Authorities) and the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA).The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) is a professional organisation providing member services and advocacy for those involved in and delivering public works and engineering services to the community. IPWEA has developed an Infrastructure Management manual which has been adopted internationally, in South Africa, U.K., U.S.A. and New Zealand.There are no other comparable university courses dealing with Road Engineering and Construction.

The proposed courses comply with the requirements of the Australian Qualifications Framework for Graduate Certificates and Diplomas. The courses are designed to provide "vocational skills and knowledge in a new professional area".The course aims to provide place-bound professional engineers in public works and industry positions with access to modern tools to efficiently design and construct durable roads and highways.The road pavement industry experience is that a specialist qualification is important in raising the status of professionals in the industry, and the distance education mode allows courses to be readily offered to candidates throughout Australia and New Zealand as well as overseas.The distance mode will greatly assist the ongoing learning process for those who change employer and/or are located in rural/regional areas and are unable to access traditional face-to-face university programs.
Applicants for the Graduate Certificate in Road Engineering and Construction must hold an undergraduate Bachelor level degree in a pavement engineering related discipline, or equivalent, a student admitted must complete satisfactorily 4 units to be eligible for the award Graduate Certificate in Road Engineering and Construction. Completion of the Graduate Certificate is required before enrolment in the Graduate Diploma.An applicant with other relevant tertiary qualifications and relevant industry experience may be considered for entry to the Graduate Certificate in Road Engineering and Construction.English language requirements can be satisfied if international applicants provide documentary evidence of one of the following, First language is English and secondary and/or undergraduate studies were conducted in English. A certified copy of the applicant's studies record clearly indicating that English was the language of instruction must be supplied; A score of the American Test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) plus Test of Written English (TWE), An overall band score of IELTS test conducted by a British Council/IDP Office.
The course is supported by the IPWEA which is also expected to give professional recognition to the awards.
After the completion of Certificate course one can opt for Graduate Diploma in Road Engineering and Construction for better career path.The career opportunities exist with State Governments,Larger Local Authorities,Private Civil and Mining Companies,Contracting,Consulting and Regulatory Organizations.
