The Graduate Certificate in Science Education is a professionally-oriented program which aims to update and broaden the science content knowledge of practising science teachers in upper primary, high schools and colleges, and others involved in the field of science education. The program addresses professional learning opportunities for teachers of science (covering both the life sciences and physical sciences which includes Maths and IT) by providing access to current developments in science ("hot topics") as well as examining how new topics can be introduced into the classroom curriculum.
General knowledge about Science Education.
The objectives of the Graduate Certificate in Science Education are to provide a structured professional development program designed specifically for the needs of science teachers which recognises that professional development is a continuous and life long process,the upgrading of disciplinary and pedagogical knowledge,focus will be placed on emerging fields within science, for example, biotechnology and nanotechnology and current issues, such as the Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumour, as well as new scientific techniques,to enhance the relevance of the science curriculum to increase engagement in the classroom,to improve the quality and qualifications of teachers being used to teach science. Declining participation in SET subjects and courses has been linked to an inadequate supply of suitably qualified teachers.
Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification. For the enquiry units, applicants need to have access to an educational setting that would allow implementation of the action research projects.
The students who complete two science units and two education units will be eligible for articulation to the Faculty of Education's Coursework masters programs. This course is accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC).
