A Doctor of Philosophy in education enables a candidate to use expertise at the frontier of a field of research and make a significant original contribution to knowledge through their research.  The research takes place over 3-4 years of study or equivalent part-time and normally results in a thesis or equivalent of circa 80-100,000 words, written in English.The research topic for a doctorate in the Faculty of Education will reflect the candidate’s own interests and the research expertise of their supervisors. All candidates for a Doctor of Philosophy are also required to enrol concurrently in the Graduate Certificate of Research.
General knowledge of Philosophy.
A Doctor of Philosophy produces individuals who can apply a substantial body of knowledge to research, investigate and develop new knowledge, in one or more fields of investigation, scholarship or professional practice.
Applicants should apply after finding a potential supervisor and discussing and agreeing on their proposed topic.  Applicants will be considered who have a bachelor’s degree with first class honours or second class honours, upper division; or a masters degree with a minimum research component (ie a thesis); or partial completion of a masters by research (up to 75%); or substantial demonstrated sector experience, previous higher education studies and professional experience and/or published research work. International applicants must also meet the University’s English language requirements for admission are an IELTS overall score, a minimum total score together with a Test of Written English (TWE)  score or more on the paper based TOEFL,a minimum total score of the internet based TOEFL,PTE Academic 58 with no score lower than 50,completion of a course of study, of at least 2 yrs duration, from an accredited University in a country where English is an official language.The study must have been instructed and examined in English. Studies must have been completed within the last 2 yrs and evidence in the form of a letter or certificate issued by the university Registrar’s office will need to be provided.
The course is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), and is approved by the Associate Membership of the Australian Clinical Psychology Assocation (ACPA) and the Australian Psychological Society (APS) College of Clinical Psychologists.
In Australia and around the world, PhD graduates are highly regarded as potential employees.  The skills and attributes gained in the degree can be the entry to a post doctoral career at a university, and a PhD is also valued highly for positions in the education and other related sectors.
