The Doctor of Business Administration is an advanced course of study designed to provide management professionals from both the public and private sectors with rigorous research training focussed on issues of contemporary professional management practice. At this stage, the DBA is offered only through industry partners in Sydney to domestic students and is not available on Tasmanian campuses.The DBA requires a contribution to knowledge in the context of professional practice. The focus is on the application of knowledge in the context of the workplace. As such, it offers an attractive, higher degree by research alternative to that traditionally pursued through the PhD.
General knowledge about Business Administration.
Through the provision of research-focused coursework and a substantial dissertation, candidates will deepen their knowledge of specific areas of management theory and practice, identify problems and formulate strategies to address these problems. Through this course study the candidates will develop a critical awareness of the nature and practice of research in professional contexts in the field of health services management; the skills necessary to evaluate critically research directly related to management practice; knowledge of research methodologies and skills in research design, data preparation and analysis;knowledge, skills and experience to operate as practitioner-researchers in a management context, thereby enhancing their ability to address high level management problems and opportunities creatively, strategically and within a framework of societal values.
Requirements for admission includes a completion of a Master of Business Administration (Health Management) or a Master of Business Administration or equivalent postgraduate coursework masters course from a recognised Australian or international tertiary institution, which includes a substantial portion in research methods / data analysis units and a significant workplace research project or equivalent. The research methods units and workplace project combined should be equivalent to at least one third of a Master's degree with a full-time duration of 18 months, or at least one quarter of a Master's degree with a full-time duration of 24 months, students should have achieved a minimum of a credit average in their graduate coursework studies as a demonstration of their capacity to undertake graduate work at an advanced level, candidates would also be expected to have relevant experience in the relevant sector/industry.
This course is accredited by the Australian Institute of Business (AIB).
The DBA is designed for managers who wish to prepare for a leadership role in the private or public sectors. Successful completion of the DBA provides graduates with a substantial background in relevant management theory, research and practice that should enhance their ability to plan and manage successfully in an increasingly complex and turbulent national and international environment, and within a framework of societal values.
