A Master of Philosophy research degree enables a candidate to undertake a program of research and advanced study in a specialist field. The research topic may be in a variety of maritime related areas, including but not limited to Aquaculture, Aquatic animal health, nutrition and physiology, Marine modeling,Fisheries management and technology,Marine engine performance,Marine and aquatic biology and ecology, Fluid-structure interactions,Seafood Quality and Safety,Maritime transport logistics,Surface and underwater vehicle hydrodynamics,Maritime safety including human factors,Ocean renewable energy,Maritime emergency and crisis management. All candidates for a Masters of Philosophy degree are also required to enrol concurrently in two units in the Graduate Certificate of Research.

The aim of the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) program is to provide research training in a manner that fosters the development of independent research skills in candidates. On completion of the period of research, the student should possess the ability to formulate a significant problem, mastery of appropriate conceptual and methodological frameworks, and the capacity for articulate and critical analysis. The MPhil thesis provides evidence of significant research as the culmination to equivalent study and research training.
Applicants should apply after finding a potential supervisor and discussing and agreeing on their proposed topic. Applicants will be considered who have an honours degree with at least second class lower standard; or a masters degree with a minimum research component (eg a thesis); or substantial demonstrated sector experience, previous higher education studies and professional experience and/or published research work. International applicants must also meet the University's English language requirements for admission are an IELTS overall score,a minimum total score together with a Test of Written English (TWE) score on the paper based TOEFL,a minimum total score together with a minimum score of the internet based TOEFL,PTE Academic 58 with no score lower than 50, completion of a course of study, of at least 2 yrs duration, from an accredited University in a country where English is an official language.The study must have been instructed and examined in English. Studies must have been completed within the last 2 yrs and evidence in the form of a letter or certificate issued by the university Registrar’s office will need to be provided.
The course is accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).
A Master of Philosophy degree provides an entry to a Doctorate at a University and graduates are also highly sought after for positions across the spectrum of available careers. AMC graduates take up roles in areas such as the Fisheries and Aquaculture Industries, Marine Environment and Maritime Management, the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry, and Naval Architecture.
