The Graduate Certificate of Applied Science (Marine Environment) provides graduates with advanced specialist skills and professional development in one of four degree major specialisations with options in Fisheries Management; Aquaculture; Marine Conservation; Aquatic Animal Health.The graduates are well positioned to contribute in areas of marine resource and environmental management, science policy, and technical management across a range of marine and maritime industries.Four coursework units are completed according to the schedules for the chosen major specialisation (Schedules A-D). A non-weighted practicum (work experience) component is a requirement of the course.
General knowledge about Marine Environment and its prime status in conservation of Planet Earth.
The program is informed by core theoretical knowledge, evidence-based practice and underpinned by a strong theory-practice nexus enacted in collaboration with appropriate contribution in areas of marine resource and environmental management, science policy, and technical management across a range of marine and maritime industries.The graduates will demonstrate maximum value to employers in industry, government and non-government organisations.
Applicants for this course will have obtained an Australian Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification at a recognised tertiary institution. Applicants with degrees in environmental management, wildlife management, marine biology, environmental science, environmental or ecological economics, environmental law or policy or related disciplines will be accepted for entry.Alternative entry is considered on a case by case basis for applicants having demonstrable learning and experience in aquatic or marine science. Those not meeting this requirement may be required to undertake additional study to gain admission.
Articulation to or from the course the graduates may enroll for but credit is offered for units completed as part of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment).Students holding a Bachelor degree majoring in biological, environmental sciences, or other relevant disciplines are eligible to enrol in this course.Graduate Certificate of Applied Science (Marine Environment) graduates can articulate directly into the Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Environment) (J6T).The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) has accredited this course as meeting the further learning requirements, in part for registration as a Chartered Scientist and Chartered Marine Scientist.
The successful completion of this degree will have prepared/further developed the graduate for a career in various marine/maritime sectors including conservation and environmental management, fisheries and aquaculture production and post-harvest, the tourism industry, shipping and off-shore industries, non-governmental organisations and all levels of government from local to global. Students graduating from this degree are well suited to industrial, governmental and non-governmental regulatory and policy positions.
