Master of Design by research candidates engage with specialised areas of design research or undertake historical and theoretical architectural research investigations.The program is available in 2 modes - project and thesis. Project mode is taken under individual supervision in a choice of program areas including:Architecture, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Fashion, Landscape Architecture.Applicants for individual research should discuss their design research proposal with the research coordinator in the relevant discipline area. Thesis mode offers the framework, focus and discipline necessary for speculative inquiry. Areas of research investigation include: design theory, historical and theoretical studies, contemporary and Australian design.

One of the following:- Successful completion of an Australian Masters by Research degree or equivalent, Successful completion of an Australian Masters by Coursework degree or equivalent WITH a research component graded as a distinction (GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00), Successful completion of an Australian Bachelor (Honours) degree graded as first or second class (over 70% or GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00). Entry into a Research program at RMIT is not based solely on academic achievement and applicants must meet the following minimum academic requirements to be considered for candidature.
The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes two types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture and the Master of Architecture by research. A program may be granted a five-year, three-year, or two-year term of accreditation, depending on its degree of conformance with established educational standards.
