Make an impact beyond the classroom. This double degree provides a professional qualification in primary education and disability studies. It develops practical skills in teaching children, youth and adults with disabilities.Students and graduates typically display especially high levels of compassion and care towards community members with special needs. This program produces teachers who understand and connect with children and youth with disabilities, to help enrich and realise their full potential.You will develop your knowledge, skills and capabilities to work proactively with people with disabilities, with their families and with other professionals in educational and community service settings.
Mathematics. A ‘Working with Children Check’ is required.
Understanding and connecting with children and youth with disabilities, to help enrich and realise their full potential and development of knowledge, skills and capabilities to work proactively with people with disabilities, with their families and with other professionals in educational and community service settings are included as major concept of study.
Student must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 70%. For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to an Australian Year 12, see the Entry requirements by country web page.Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.
Graduates are eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching in primary teaching and special education and are eligible for professional employment in the disability sector.Through reciprocal arrangements between registration authorities, graduates can practise as teachers nationally and overseas.Graduates can apply for membership of appropriate professional bodies and will be advised of the requirements of relevant organisations during the double degree.
Graduates work in primary schools, special schools, special developmental schools, private enterprise, government agencies and community service organisations. With further study, graduates can enter other careers, including social and youth work.A global lack of teachers specialised in disability means there are employment opportunities in developing countries like India and China
4 years full-time or 8 years part-time, International student visa holders can only study full-time.
