The Bachelor of Arts (Photography) is the oldest continuous-running photography program in the world and has an enviable reputation. Our graduates become high-calibre professional image-makers. They understand the importance of creative thinking and the underlying meaning of photographic image making. Graduates will learn contemporary commercial skills from Australia’s finest commercial photographers and respected academics. Through practical, theoretical and conceptual investigations students will develop a range of skills relevant to the diversifying creative and commercial photographic industries.
Current Year 12 prerequisite units 3 and 4—a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.
The major studies include contemporary commercial skills from Australia’s finest commercial photographers and respected academics. Development of skills relevant to the diversifying creative and commercial photographic industries is also studied.
Student must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 70%. Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.
The professional accreditation after completing bachelor’s degree is that this degree prepares students to enter one of the exciting professional photographic fields. By combining courses from the Art Department and the Department of Design, as well as support classes in Journalism and Business, the program equips students aesthetically, technically, and professionally for a future in photography. The program has a curricular emphasis on the visual arts, integrating areas that are particularly valuable to those considering a professional photographic career or continuing in a graduate program.
After completing graduation the graduates will be prepared for a range of photographic career options. Graduates work in a wide array of fields, including :advertising, fashion, editorial photography, libraries, museums and galleries, education units, film, TV and video production, research, medical research, manufacturing industries, secondary, TAFE and university-level teaching/lecturing. Opportunities exist as:curators, artists, digital production consultants, colour management specialists, workflow consultants, professional photographers, imaging specialists.After completing this course the range of career options is so broad that graduates will be encouraged to consider these during final year to ensure they are prepared.
