The rapid growth of technological and scientific innovation in genetics, biotechnology, conservation biology, reproduction and nutrition has resulted in a need for further training for scientists across animal industries in all areas. The Graduate Diploma in Animal Science offers advanced technical training in a focused area of animal science: genetics, nutrition or reproduction, biotechnology and animal production. Undertaking electives from a range of units of study, Students will be equipped with advanced skills applied in a variety of industries including poultry, wildlife, pig, aquaculture, dairy, companion and pedigree animals, sheep and beef. The Graduate Diploma may include a supervised research project and is part of an embedded program in animal science. Subject to meeting progression requirements, Students may apply to transfer to the Master of Animal Science.

The course may include a supervised research project.
A successful applicant for admission to the Graduate Diploma in Animal Science need to hold (a) hold a bachelor’s degree or higher award from the University of Sydney, or equivalent qualification, in veterinary science, animal science or agriculture; or (b) have completed the requirements of an embedded graduate certificate in this discipline from the University of Sydney, or equivalent qualification.It is assumed that applicants have statistics knowledge at an undergraduate level.
Animal studies is a diverse field involving caring for and working with recreational animals and farm animals, and the study of Australia's wildlife. This program allows students to specialise in one of these areas. Students can also develop core disciplinary knowledge and skills in the animal sciences, and the ability to integrate and apply these in professional practice.
Completing the Graduate Diploma in Animal Science at the University of Sydney provides an excellent path for graduates to pursue careers in animal science, research and a range of animal industries. Employment opportunities are available in diverse locations with production animals, companion animals and wildlife. Career opportunities may include: careers in primary production and agribusiness, aquaculture, ancillary and support industries (veterinary and feed supplements), quality assurance of food and feed products, food safety, feed technology, overseas aid in food production, animal nutrition and animal health, careers in government/research: biosecurity and quarantine, animal welfare, regulatory, advisory and policymaking positions, animal health and diagnostics, consultancy, laboratory and field research in the animal sciences and tertiary education, careers in genetics/biotechnology: medical research, native animal genomics, molecular biology (animal and human), genetics and biotechnology companies and assisted reproductive technologies (artificial breeding and IVF).
