If the student is fascinated by materials, surface, texture, pattern, colour, art and design, if Student is eager in making things with his own hands or wonder how textiles are made and applied, then student is good material for a career in textile design. As a textile designer student will create designs for knitted, woven and printed fabrics or textile products for a range of contexts, including:fashion, interiors, homewares, craft, other commercial applications. Student can also work in:graphics, packaging, greetings cards, ceramics, wrapping, wallpaper. Student can also work in a design team for small and large companies or can start own business. This is a practical, hands-on, studio-based program where student will have access to state-of-the-art facilities to complete project briefs. Student will develop colour, drawing, design and computer skills to plan, develop and produce screen-printed, machine-knitted or woven fabrics for a variety of applications. Student can also create experimental textile samples using a range of materials and processes including dye technologies, digital printing, laser cutting and fabric manipulation.

The major studies include basic concepts of materials, surface, texture, pattern, colour, art and design, The study also includes creation of designs for knitted, woven and printed fabrics or textile products for a range of contexts, including: fashion, interiors, homewares, craft, other commercial applications.
Student must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 50%.For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to an Australian Year 12, see the Entry requirements by country web page.Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary Diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.
The programs are recognised and supported by the Textile, Clothing and Footwear Industries Training Accreditation Board.
Graduates find work as:textile designers/artists/makers/crafters, knitters, weavers and screen printers, self-employed freelance designers, fabric wholesalers.Student will work in areas like: clothing companies and fashion labels, textile manufacturing companies producing woven and knitted fabrics, production management, design consultancies, automotive colour and trim departments, fashion sourcing agencies, screen printing companies. Further afield, graduates work as: fabric importers and distributors, design educators, department store fabric buyers, colour forecasters, stylists, product developers for international aid organisations assisting disadvantaged communities.
