This program will give practical and technical skills to work with civil engineers in the research, design and construction of infrastructure projects.Civil and structural engineering involves the design and construction of roads, airports, railways, buildings, bridges, dams and drainage systems. The student will be trained to do work which includes computer-aided drafting (CAD) software to produce detailed drawings, plans and designs for construction work, doing cost estimates and preparing material specification, liaising with construction workers and project managers, inspecting completed works to ensure they meet specifications and regulations, conducting laboratory and/or field testing of materials, soil and water quality.
Current Year 12 prerequisite units 1 and 2—two units (any study combination) Mathematics (any).
Development of practical and technical skills to work with civil engineers in the research, design and construction of infrastructure projects and design and construction of roads, airports, railways, buildings, bridges, dams and drainage systems are included as major concept of study.
Student must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 50%.For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to an Australian Year 12, see the Entry requirements by country web page.Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary Diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.
On graduating, Students will be eligible for membership of Engineers Australia.
As a graduate, Student will be well placed for work in both the public and private sector. Likely positions include: laboratory technician, research assistant, construction supervisor , CAD draftsperson working under the supervision of a professional engineer. Student will get opportunity to attend seminars given by Melbourne consulting organizations at RMIT. Student will glean insight into their operations and be advised about job prospects. RMIT, previously have been visited by GHD, SKM, Kingston City Council and a variety of civil contracting companies.
2 years full-time or 4 years part-time.International student visa holders can only study full-time.
