To achieve a PhD ,Graduates will work intensively on a research project to derive a solution for a major problem in civil engineering. Research areas include: structural engineering , computational mechanics, structural optimisation, construction materials, high-strength and high-performance concrete, geotechnical engineering, construction management , infrastructure maintenance and management, water systems engineering and water resources , transport engineering. Candidates are closely supervised while developing their idea into a fully scoped proposal to be reviewed and approved by the School.

Entry into a Research program at RMIT is not based solely on academic achievement and applicants must meet the following minimum academic requirements to be considered for candidature.
The Doctor of Philosophy (Civil Engineering) is awarded full accreditation by Engineers Australia, the national engineering accreditation body .
Graduates work in senior positions in academia, research organisations and industry.
