This unique postgraduate program looks at urban and environmental management issues in the developing world. More people now live in urban centers than in rural areas, posing significant challenges to urban planners and development workers. It focuses on the problems associated with urbanization in developing countries, like: inadequate infrastructure, informal settlements, the ecological and economic requirements of cities. Student will gain an intensive professional education in urban and environmental management. The program suits those looking to forge a career in sustainable urban development. Many students who enrol in this program are already working in the field and are updating their qualifications. Others have careers in related fields (health, environment, governance) and use the International Urban and Environmental Management (IUEM) program to reorient their careers. Some students are recent graduates studying the program to establish a career in this area.

In this course major studies include equipping of urban professionals with the latest insights and skills in urban and environmental management and to enable for identifying and analyzing of environmental problems as well as to successfully manage sustainable urban development.
The Graduate Certificate in International Urban and Environmental Management is accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia, provided students to complete the requirements. To achieve this accreditation, students must complete 4 core courses and 4 planning electives.
This Master of Social Science (International Urban and Environmental Management) prepares graduates for careers in the following areas: governments in developing countries, non-government organization’s (NGOs), multilateral and bilateral international development agencies. Graduates work in Australia or overseas in environmental and urban planning and management. Recent students have been employed by: consultancies like Connell Wagner and Leighton Asia, NGOs in Australia, in the Asia-Pacific region and further afield like Oxfam and World Vision, Australian government and international agencies like the United Nations and the Asian Development Bank. Some graduates use the program to advance to PhD research.
