RMIT University

This rapidly advancing healthcare discipline involves the application of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation for the diagnosis and treatment of injury and disease. RMIT is the only Victorian university offering a multidisciplinary approach to this field of study. In this course student will have the option to study in all medical radiations disciplines at undergraduate level. This means a broader education than alternative degrees, which are generally specific to one area. RMIT Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiations) allows to enrol directly into 1 of 3 specialized streams: medical imaging, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy.
Physics or Higher Mathematics, Chemistry or Biology. A Working with Children Check and National Police Records Check are required prior to commencing the program. You are also expected to follow professional requirements such as behaviour, dress code and
Major studies include development of skills related to medical radiations.
Student must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 65%. For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to an Australian Year 12, see the Entry requirements by country web page.Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.
Upon successful completion of this program, Student’s are eligible to apply for provisional registration through the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA).For 2013, the completion of a full 48-week Internship or Professional Development Year (PDY) is required before student applies for full accreditation. Student will also be eligible to apply for the National Professional Development Program conducted by the Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR) or Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine (ANZSNM).There will be updates by the MRPBA regarding internship requirement for 2014 and beyond.The intern/PDY is not part of this program.
Graduates are employed in either the public or private healthcare sector as nuclear medicine technologists, radiation therapists or diagnostic radiographers. To practice in Victoria, Student must fulfill the criteria for registration by the Medical Radiation Practitioners Board of Victoria.Graduates can undertake further study in the specialist fields of MRI, CT, U/S, PET and specialist areas in radiation therapy.According to ABS data from 2010 there were 15,400 medical imaging professionals in Australia. Between 2008 and 2010, the industry saw a 14% growth in job opportunities.
