This program prepares student for a career as a specialist physical education teacher. Coaching, health and fitness promotion and sport education for school and community based groups might be just some of student’s responsibilities. Graduates can get chance to teach primary and secondary students in government and independent schools, and have the opportunity to teach students with disabilities. Student’s will also gain understanding of: the exercise sciences and their influence and effects on human performance, the professional role of physical educators, the contribution educators make to school and community needs. This course also helps to gain a second teaching method, which may include biology, health or maths. Students of this course will be exposed to a broad study of exercise sciences (anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, motor learning), sport and physical activity, and their application to the teaching of physical education and sport in schools.
Mathematics (or VCE Mathematics (any)) and 1 of the following are required - Chemistry, Biology, Higher Mathematics, Physics or Physical Education. This program includes a professional practice work placement and hence a Working with Children Check is req
Anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, motor learning sport and physical activity, and their application to the teaching of physical education and sport in schools exercise sciences and their influence and effects on human performance, the professional role of physical educators is studied in this course as major concept.
Student must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 65%. For information on international qualifications and corresponding entry requirements that are equivalent to an Australian Year 12, see the Entry requirements by country web page.Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.
This program is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
Strong employment opportunities exist in these areas: government secondary colleges, independent schools, primary school physical education programs. Additional employment opportunities exist in: tertiary institutions, fitness, leisure and recreation centers, fitness advisers (sporting teams), fitness consultancies (private and government), private companies who contract with schools to deliver physical education and sport, sport coaching, sport management.Over the past 5 years more than 95% of graduates seeking teacher employment have been successful within 6 months of graduating.
