The PhD and/or Master of Nursing by Research helps student to achieve an advanced level of academic achievement and scholarship, producing independent research that contributes to the body of nursing knowledge. RMIT can provide research supervision in a range of areas and in a variety of theoretical traditions and research methodologies. These include: child and family health nursing, clinical nursing, critical transcultural nursing, health education, health policy, mental health nursing, midwifery, multicultural health, policy evaluation, primary health, public health. PhD candidates are normally required to do a postgraduate-level research unit as part of their candidature. If student is eligible, then student can have an exemption from this requirement at enrolment.

Entry into a Research program at RMIT is not based solely on academic achievement and applicants must meet the following minimum academic requirements to be considered for candidature.
Graduates of higher degree programs in nursing and midwifery find work in leadership roles in health care services and public health organisations. Theyll be able to develop independent research, form collaborations and - for PhD graduates - apply for post-doctoral posts.
